Results in the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship – how the points are awarded
On this page you will find all the information regarding all the results in the 2022 world championship. We cover the championship live and will update all results as soon as each match finishes, with results collected from the official homepage of the IIHF. In addition you are able to follow the actual standings in matches currently playing.
Each finished match affects the total points among the teams, which you can view on the tab Groups & Tables. A win in full time gives three points, while those points are shared between the teams should the match go into overtime or penalty shoot-outs. In those cases, the winning team receives two points, while the loser gets one consolation point. A loss in a world championship game means that you leave without any points at all.
In order to advance in the tournament you need to place in the top four teams of your group. At the same time, the teams want to avoid placing last as those teams will be demoted to a lower division in the next championships.
Extra time and penalty shootouts in the ice hockey world championship
In ice hockey a match can not end in a draw, so a winning team must be determined in all matches. This rule obviously also applies during the world championship, and if the 60 allotted minutes are not enough, the match continues in extra time.
The extra time runs for five minutes and is played shortly after the end of the last period. Here the teams play with three field players each, fighting for the third point. The extension carries on until one of the teams score, or until the five minutes have run out. During the playoffs the extra time is actually extended to ten minutes, with the exception of the final. In that very last game of the tournament a 20 minute extension is added instead.
If neither team manage to score during the extra time, the game goes to penalty shootouts, where the teams will take five shots each. The team that scores the most amount of shootouts emerge victorious. If these five shots are not enough, the penalty shootout is extended with a shot each for the two teams, until one of the teams has scored one more goal on the same amount of shots as the other.
Since 2019, there is a rule that states that the final in the ice hockey world championship can no longer go to penalty shootouts. Therefore, if the 20 minutes of extra time fails to produce a winner, the match carries on with a new, full period, until one team manages to put the puck in the net. The last time a world championship final was decided by a penalty shootout was in 2018, when Sweden took the gold by beating Switzerland, who missed their last, and deciding, shot.
When the result of a match that has gone to penalty shootouts is presented, one does not include all the goals made during the shootout. Instead, only the deciding goal is added to the goals scored during the three periods. If, for example, a match that ends 2-2 goes to shootouts, the final result will be 3-2 to the winning team.

There has never previously been such a selection of live score reporting, and in the past it was virtually impossible to follow your favorite team unless you were there in person.
The oldest form of live reporting happened in the 1890’s with the aid of the telegraph. In 1896 a telegraph was set up in the home arena of the Montreal Canadiens, Victoria Rink, so the supporters would be able to follow the Stanley Championship final between Winnipeg and Montreal. In 1923 an ice hockey game was first broadcast live on radio, when the third period of the match between Midland and North Toronto in the Canadian OHA was broadcast as a test. It did take until 1933 however, before all of Canada could follow an NHL match on the radio.
The first ice hockey match broadcast on television was an NHL match in 1940, though it took another 15 years before the matches were regularly shown on screen. The biggest reason for this delay was the failure between the league and the players to agree on the division of the television revenue. Today you can watch most leagues one way or another, either on the television or streamed online.
The arrival of the internet drastically changed the circumstances as far as live scoring. Today you can basically find all teams and sports on the internet, and receive live reports from all matches the world over. During the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship you can find live scoring from all world championship games here at VMHockey.se.

When you bet live, you have the advantage of being able to form a good picture of the match before you bet your money, which, according to many, increase your chances of nailing your bet. At the same time, the odds constantly change on live plays, as they are totally dependent on what is happening on the ice. This means timing is an important factor for success in live betting.
List: Crazy results in the history of national teams
Ice hockey is a sport where anything can happen, and during a world championship the end result may not always reflect the picture of the match. The top favorites usually advance through the world championship group games with good results, but occasionally the big teams underestimate the smaller nations, which sets the scene for some shocking turnarounds. Here’s a list of some of the most surprising results in the history of the national teams.
USA – Soviet union, 1980 Olympics
Most people probably know this story if you have seen the classic movie “Miracle”. Coach Herb Brooks put together a team consisting only of college athletes when he took the US-troupe to the Olympics in Lake Placid in 1980. All the experts had basically counted the team out in advance, and no one believed they would have anything to do with the top positions. The Americans managed to get to the semi-finals, but there they were faced with the star-studded team of the Soviet Union, with players like Charlamov, Vladimir Krutov, and Sergej Makarov. The end result was pre-determined, and it didn’t help the self-confidence that the US had suffered a humiliating loss in the world championship rehearsals against that exact team. Against the odds however, the USA won and the final result ended at 4-3 after a decider by Mike Eruzione. The US team managed to win the tournament after beating Finland in the final, and that Olympic gold is to this day one of the biggest bangs in the world of ice hockey.
Belarus– Sweden, 2002 Olympic Games
The painful loss the Three Crowns suffered against Belarus is something we are trying to forget, but despite that it is a result that belongs on the list of the most surprising moments. Ahead of the Olympic Games, coach Hardy Nilsson had stated that Sweden would be playing “Big Ice Hockey”, a game system that had proven incredibly efficient in the group games. Sweden won all their matches, and the result showed great dominance (5-2 vs. Canada, 2-1 vs. The Czech Republic and 7-1 vs. Germany). Due to their good result in the group games, Sweden was rewarded with an easy draw in the first round of the playoffs, against Belarus. Rumor had it that Belarus had booked their tickets home the day after the quarte finals, as they knew Sweden would take them out. The match turned out to be tougher than expected for Sweden however, and with less than three minutes left to play, the score was 3-3. At that moment, Vladimir Kopats decides to take a shot from midfield, and a stunned, jumping Tommy Salo takes the puck on his shoulder, drops it in the air, and the puck annoyingly jumps in to the Swedish goal. 4-3 to Belarus and one of the biggest bangs in ice hockey history was a fact.
Germany– the Czeck Republic, 1996 World Championship
Germany is a nation on the up, and are right now not far behind the top of the hockey world. In 1996 however, Germany was a Mickey Mouse nation as far as ice hockey goes, and the Czech Republic was one of most star-studded teams in the world championship, with players like Jaromir Jagr, Robert Reichel, and Petr Nedved. The Czechs did however serve up one of the biggest fiascos in ice hockey history, and the result was anything but flattering. The first two matches ended with a 7-3 loss to Finland, and then a 3-0 loss to Sweden. The most embarrassing loss however, came in the final match against Germany. Many believed the Czechs would play for their honor and crush Germany, but instead they lost by a whopping 7-1, exiting the world championship with a humiliating 4-17 goal difference.
Germany – Canada, 2018 Olympics
One of the more recent big bangs must be Germany’s performance in the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, 2018. The Germans had a decent team, but no one believed they would achieve the results they were capable of. Germany started the group games as expected, with losses against Finland and Sweden, and a win against Norway. Facing the playoffs, Germany was ranked 9 of 12, but when they got their somethi Germany started by taking Switzerland out, and in the quarter finals they sent Sweden packing with their tails between their legs after a 4-3 loss against the German machine. With Canada waiting in the semi-final, many believed Germany’s adventure to be over, but even Canada was laid out flat with a 4-3 victory. In the final, Russia proved to be one too many, but the match went into extra time before Russia were able to win 4-3. Their victory against Canada in the semi final goes down in history as one of the most impressive big bangs ever.
