WJC, an abbreviation for the World Junior Championship, is a championship played yearly. Here the worlds best junior national teams containing tomorrows big stars face each other. In 2022 the JWC will be held in the Canadian cities of Edmonton and Red Deer. This championship, which will be the 46th one, will be played from December 26, 2021, to January 6, 2022. A total of 10 teams take part, and Sweden is one of these.

How is the U20 tournament played?

The 10 teams have, in advance, been divided into two groups of five teams each, where everyone plays each other once during the group games. After that, the four best teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, where the winning team from group A faces the fourth place team in group B and so on.

This is followed by semi-finals, where the winners go on to the final and the losers fight for the bronze medal. At the same time the playoffs are settled, the worst teams in each group play in qualifiers to see who will remain in the highest division and who will have to leave.

The teams taking part in the 2022 World Championship for Juniors are:

Finland
Canada
Russia

Earlier editions of the Ice Hockey Junior World Championship

JWC has been in existence since 1974 (though it did not become an official championship until 1977), and has from the start been a yearly tournament. The championship is often arranged at the end of the year, and is usually a high point for those interested in sport during the Christmas holidays.

Representing their country in this tournament is an honor for many young hockey players, who often make their international debut here. If the team does well, the players may receive some attention, and thus have an opportunity to advance in their careers.
